E-commerce can be defined as buying and selling goods and
services online by businesses and consumers.
It can be divided into three categories:
- B2B - Business to Business
(Siebel)
- B2C - Business to Consumer
(Amazon)
- C2C - Consumer to Consumer
(E-bay)
Retail wood sales would, of course, fall into the B2C category
and lumber suppliers selling wholesale would fall into the
B2B slot.
In the near future, people will realize that the Internet
is ultimately a viable source of income for their business
and there is money to be made in online commerce. But, there
will be more realistic expectations and down to earth ideas
than those that have been projected to date. More and more
real-world businesses will use the Internet as an extension
to their business.
Online sales will increase. Even during this current financial
down period, we are still seeing a tremendous rise in Internet
usage. Several recent studies have shown that more and more
people are spending more time online and less time watching
television.
Retirees who previously found the internet a daunting tool
are now embracing it and revelling in the conveniences it
offers - from online banking to researching and ordering products.
When advertisers see that more of their potential customers
are online, they will begin to increase their online marketing
budgets. Forrester Research says that in as little as 3 years,
up to 20% of advertising dollars will be spent online.
Since more businesses will be functioning online, the B2B
world is where you will see a dramatic economic increase.
Competition will increase dramatically as more businesses
go online. Even now, almost every company has an online presence
in one form or another. In the future most businesses without
a Web strategy will not succeed.
