Why have an online presence?
In an age when consumers can sit in the comfort of
their home and pay their bills, find a date for Friday night,
get on a guest list, buy a ticket to a ball game, book a trip,
order their groceries, download an owners manual and bid on
a collectors item, it still amazes us when we ask small business
owners why they don’t have an online presence and they
respond with ‘I don’t see how it would benefit
my business’.
If you were looking for a specific product and weren’t
sure who offered that product, what would be the most effective
way for you to find it? Would it be to search through the
Yellow Pages and call several businesses, inevitably being
put on hold as they attended to their other customers and
checked their inventory? Or would it be to do a Search online
for the product in your local area, returning a list of web
addresses that you could click on and not only be able to
view the product, along with any accessories, technical documentation
and warranty information, but also be able to do price comparisons,
be eligible for online discounts, purchase the product and
have it shipped directly to your door without the hassles
of battling traffic, finding parking and standing in line-ups?
Your website works for you while you sleep. It helps you
retain existing customers by providing service information
and keeping them up to date with new products and/or services
that you have to offer, as well as letting them know about
current promotions. Your website is also globally accessible.
So if you own a flower shop in Canada and a user in New Zealand
has a relative in your area who they would like to send flowers
to, you have opened up your business to another market without
any additional costs.
If you would like to get started developing an online presence,
